Men Win, Women Fall In Landmark Opener

MADISON, N.J. –
The Drew University men's and women's tennis teams opened their Landmark Conference schedule on Saturday by hosting Catholic.  Competing on the outdoor courts at the Drew Tennis Complex, the Ranger men (10-1, 1-0 Landmark) defeated the Cardinals (3-8, 0-1 Landmark) by a 6-3 count.  In the women's match, which was held indoors at the Simon Forum, Catholic (8-6, 1-0 Landmark) earned a 7-2 win over Drew (5-3, 0-1 Landmark).
 
Drew's men began the day by taking two of the three doubles matches.  The Rangers' No. 1 tandem of Vineet Vemulapally (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Geoffrey Diehl (West Hartford, Conn.) earned an 8-5 victory over Jan Lasota and Rob Alexander, while Karel Raska (Morristown, N.J.) and Bryce Weizer (Orwigsburg, Pa.) rallied to defeat Kyle Weber and Frankie Fortunati, 9-7, in the No. 3 position.  At No. 2 doubles, Catholic's Ted Tiu and Matt Holtschneider topped Will Morrison (San Diego, Calif.) and Bryce Kennedy (Mount Vernon, N.Y.), 8-6.
 
In singles play, the Rangers earned victories in the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions.  Vemulapally topped Lasota 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Diehl beat Alexander, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot.  Drew clinched the match with Morrison's 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Tiu at No. 3 singles.  The Rangers added a win at No. 5 singles, where Raska knocked off Holtschneider by a score of 6-2, 6-4.  At No. 4 singles, Kennedy fell, 6-1, 6-3, to Fortunati.  Catholic also won the No. 6 singles match, with Weber defeating Lloyd Goldstein (New Providence, N.J.) 6-3, 1-6, 10-4.
 
Ashley Camel (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was responsible for both Drew victories on the women's side.  She teamed with Ty Ty Witten (New Haven, Conn.) to notch a 9-7 victory over Jenna Gietl and Erin Cole at No. 1 doubles before defeating Gietl 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match. 
 
Three of the other five singles matches went three sets, with Catholic taking the final set in each.  Sarah MacLean beat Witten 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 position, while Lisa Geandry topped Christina Christodoulou (Branchburg, N.J.) 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.  In No. 5 singles, the Cardinals' Elizabeth Ast earned a 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 triumph over Kathryn Swenor (Basking Ridge, N.J.).  Meanwhile, Drew's No. 2 doubles tandem of Christodoulou and Cristina Riccio (New Providence, N.J.) went to a tiebreaker before falling to MacLean and Colleen McLaughlin, 9-8 (9-7).
 
At No. 3 singles, Cole topped Riccio 6-4, 6-2, while Grace Connell earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sarah Noel Jeune (Orange, N.J.) in the No. 6 position.  Catholic also won the No. 3 doubles match, with Lisa Geandry and Connell defeating Xylia Bruff (South Plainfield, N.J.) and Swenor, 8-1.
 
On Sunday, the Rangers continue their five-match homestand by welcoming Goucher to the Drew Tennis Complex at 1 p.m.
