Keuka Edges Field Hockey in Shootout

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University field hockey team blanked Keuka College for 90 minutes of regulation and overtime, but the Wolves edged the Rangers 1-0 in a shootout to come away with a 1-0 non-conference victory Saturday afternoon at Ranger Stadium.

Turning Point: After the Rangers missed on their opening attempt in the shootout, Keuka (1-2) cashed in on the Wolves' first attempt, as Shelby Lamb drove to her right and slid the ball around the goalie. The shot proved to be the difference, as neither side could convert on any of their remaining touches. Senior Ryann Callaghan made a spectacular save on Keuka's second attempt, stacking the pads to deny a shot from point-blank range. The shootout was played under new NCAA rules in which the attacking player starts from the 23-meter line and has eight seconds to score.

Working Overtime: After the two sides combined for just six shots in regulation, the offense opened up for both sides in the two 10-minute overtime periods, when four players come off the field for a 7-on-7 match-up. Drew dominated the first extra session, holding a 4-0 advantage in both shots and corners. Then in an entertaining second OT, each side reeled off four shots. The Rangers threatened in the closing moments but freshman Jules DeGenova had a shot saved by a defender and another knocked down by the goalie just before the horn.

Top Performers: Callaghan finished with five saves, including three in the second overtime. Freshman April Serratelli came off the bench to fire off a game-high four shots, including two that were on frame.

Stats Sheet: Drew finished with a 12-6 shot advantage for the game and and a 10-7 edge in corners.

Up Next: The Rangers (0-4) hit the road on Wednesday, when they visit William Paterson University starting at 7 p.m.
