SCRANTON, Pa. - The University of Scranton scored the game's first three goals and the host Royals handed the Rangers a 4-1 setback in Landmark Conference (LC) field hockey action Thursday evening.
The game was originally scheduled to be played on Wednesday but was postponed due to inclement weather.
The Rangers threatened early, as freshman
Lauren Zultowski fired a shot on goal 28 seconds into the match. But it was saved by goalie Clair McAllister and the Royals would not allow a shot for the remainder of the half.
Junior keeper
Joie Slossar kept Scranton off the scoreboard early, saving her first three shots on goal. But the Royals (9-5, 4-0 LC), the only undefeated field hockey team in Landmark Conference play, broke through with a pair of goals late in the opening quarter. The Royals tacked on another tally early in the second period and would lead 3-0 through the end of the third quarter.
Senior
Sami Strathern pulled the Rangers to within two when she scored just under four minutes into the fourth quarter. Following a penalty corner, Zultowski fired a shot on the cage that Strathern tipped in from the right post for her first goal of the season.
The Royals would answer three minutes later to set the final score.
Slossar finished with 12 saves, including four apiece in both the first and third quarters.
The Rangers (2-13, 0-4 LC) return home on Saturday, when they take on Moravian College at 1 p.m. in another Landmark Conference tilt.
