Men's Soccer Scores Early, But Scranton Tops Rangers

MADISON, N.J. - The Rangers scored the game's first goal, but the University of Scranton responded with three unanswered tallies for a 3-1 Landmark Conference (LC) men's soccer victory Wednesday evening in Ranger Stadium.

Senior Tyler Kwaak gave the Rangers the lead early, scoring in the seventh minute on a goal set up by classmates Matt Asante and Aidan Cserhat. Cserhat took a pass from Asante on the right side and flicked it over to Kwaak at the top of the box. Kwaak slanted a shot inside the left post for his first goal of the season.

Minutes later, senior goalkeeper Jason Adamo deflected a well-struck ball from deep in the left wing. He would finish with two saves in the opening half, and he also cleaned up numerous dangerous loose balls to keep the Royals off the scoreboard early.

Scranton (9-4-2, 4-1 LC) broke through in the 36th minute, when it received a free kick just outside the 18 following a Drew yellow card. Jarred Corbett drilled a shot that bounced off the right post and into the net to the match at 1-1.

The visitors took advantage of another free kick for what held up as the game-winner. From the left side, Christian Savino delivered a ball through traffic and just inside the far post with just 24 seconds on the clock to give Scranton a 2-1 halftime lead.

Junior Jake Marlowe came on in goal for the Rangers at the start of the second half and made a nice save right away, hauling in a hard shot from point-blank range. Drew had an excellent look at the net in the 50th minute, when junior Nate Race unloaded from right wing but had his shot tipped by Scranton keeper Jake Holofski. The Royals then scored an insurance goal in the 58th minute, when Jon Roberts took a long pass from beyond midfield and kicked it in from the right post.

Marlowe kept it a two-goal game with his second and final save of the night in the 85th minute, knocking down another blast from in close.

Adamo and Marlowe each finished with two saves while Holofski also stopped a pair of shots.

Drew finished with a 14-12 edge in shots while both sides took four corner kicks.

The Rangers (4-9-2, 0-4-1 LC) play their home finale on Saturday, when they take on Juniata College at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
