Women's Soccer Captures Senior Day Victory

MADISON, N.J. - Junior Sarah Racine scored a pair of first-half goals and the Drew University women's soccer team captured a 3-1 Landmark Conference (LC) victory over Juniata College Saturday afternoon in Ranger Stadium.

Drew's four seniors were recognized in a brief ceremony prior to the start of the game.

The Rangers improved to 7-8 on the season and pushed their Landmark Conference record to 3-3, matching their highest conference victory total since the 2014 squad finished 3-4 in the Landmark.

Drew came out aggressive early, reeling off five shots in the opening 15 minutes. Junior Leah Dentale fired a shot on goal in the fourth minute before junior Marissa McGaffney and Racine placed back-to-back headers on frame two minutes later.

The Rangers broke through in the 18th minute. Junior Lauren Cassella sent in a cross from the right, and Racine drilled it in from the middle of the box.

Juniata converted off a corner kick in the 24th minute, when Brooke Rotheram dribbled to just outside the 18 and lofted a shot inside the far post, making it 1-1.

Racine quickly responded with what held up as the game-winner less than two minutes later. Dentale sent a long pass into the box, and it bounced off a defender and right to Racine, who delivered a shot inside the right post for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Freshman Angela Accetturo preserved the Rangers' one-goal advantage when she made a tremendous leaping save on a free kick in the 43rd minute and it was a 2-1 game at the half.

Accetturo was tested again just moments into the second period, making a save 14 seconds into the stanza. Accetturo would make her third and final stop of the night three minutes later.

Drew received an insurance goal in the 72nd minute, when McGaffney drove a long shot over the outstretched hands of a leaping Juniata keeper for her first tally of the season.

The Rangers survived a scare in the 86th minute, when the Eagles had an open look on a breakaway but clanged a shot off the right post.

Drew finished the game with advantages in shots (22-6) and corner kicks (6-5). Accetturo finished with three saves while Cati Besch made six stops for Juniata.

The Rangers play their home finale on Tuesday, when they take on cross-town rival FDU-Florham at 7 p.m.
