Rangers Break School Record for Victories in Senior Day Thriller Versus Catholic

MADISON, N.J. – Junior guard Riley Collins sunk a pair of go-ahead free throws with three seconds left and the Drew University men's basketball team earned its program-record 20th win in thrilling fashion, holding off Landmark Conference foe Catholic University 92-90 in a back-and-forth shootout on Senior Day. Collins scored 23 of his game-high 34 points in the second half as the Rangers (20-5, 12-2 LC) closed the regular season on a five-game winning streak and finished undefeated (9-0) at home, including 7-0 in Baldwin Gym. They will head into the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the Landmark Conference playoffs for the first time in program history.

How it Happened: The Rangers fell behind by as much as 14 in the opening half and trailed by 11 at the intermission but showed their resolve once again. Drew put together a 20-4 run that spanned both halves to reclaim the lead. The hosts appeared to have their milestone victory in hand after leading by 13 with 7:30 left, but the Cardinals (10-15, 6-8 LC) came roaring back and tied the game three times in the final three minutes, the last coming on a pair of Riley Hayes free throws that made it 90-all with 1:11 remaining. The Rangers missed a shot at the other end before Catholic's Collin Hartmann was fouled on a 3-pointer with 27 ticks showing. However, he missed all three shots before Collins was fouled driving toward the hoop in the closing seconds. After hitting both shots, the Cardinals misfired on a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer as the near-capacity crowd erupted.

Top Performers: Collins came up just one point shy of his career-high, set earlier this year versus Washington and Lee University in the championship game of the Rose City Classic. He shot 11-for-18, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, and went 9-for-10 at the foul line. Collins also dished out eight assists and grabbed five rebounds. Senior guard Darius Reiter added 16 points and seven rebounds while senior forward Nate Aldrich notched 15 points and eight boards. Senior forward Sky Harris added 10 points and five rebounds off the bench while sophomore forward Malachi Walker contributed nine points, seven rebounds, and three blocks. Andre Mitchell and Jimmy Golaszewski paced the Cardinals with 25 points apiece.

Stat Sheet: The Rangers owned the glass, posting their largest rebounding margin (43-25) of the year while pulling down a season-high 20 offensive boards. The Blue and Green shot 48.5 percent for the game while the Cardinals connected on 47.4 percent of their shots.

Senior Day: Drew recognized its seniors in a pre-game ceremony. All six Ranger seniors entered the game, including Dan Roibal (3 points, 3  rebounds), Bobby Ganges (2 assists), and Chatham Studer.

Next Up: Drew opens Landmark Conference tournament play on Wednesday, when the Rangers host fourth-seeded University of Scranton at 7 p.m. in the semifinals.
