Women’s Hoops Edged by E-town

MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore guard Julia Ramos scored a game-high 25 points, but a late rally fell just short as the Drew University women's basketball team dropped a close 65-60 decision to Elizabethtown College Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.

How it Happened: The Rangers trailed 16-15 at the end of the first quarter, but opened the second period with a 12-3 run. Ramos banked in an acrobatic jumping while drawing the foul, and completed the 3-point play to make it 27-19 with 5:08 on the clock. But the Blue Jays (16-6, 9-3 LC) rallied with seven unanswered points, and Drew would lead just 29-28 at the intermission. The Rangers pushed their lead to six midway with 3:13 left in the third quarter after a 3-pointer from senior guard Hailey Stine, but E-town ended the stanza on an 11-1 run and led 46-42 heading into the final period.

The visitors extended their lead to seven with 2:17 left and it was a 61-54 game after the Jays hit a pair of free throws with 24 ticks showing. But that's when Stine knocked down another triple, and after two more E-town free throws, freshman guard Brooke Timinski connected from beyond the arc with 10 seconds to go, making it a one-possession game (63-60). However, the Blue Jays iced it by making their final two fouls shots to set the final score.

Top Performers: Ramos finished with her second-straight 25-point game after dropping 33 in a victory at Susquehanna on Wednesday. She shot 9-for-16 and 3-for-5 from 3-point range, and she also dished out six assists. Stine finished with nine points while sophomore forward Erin Frederick contributed nine points, six rebounds, and two blocks. Lydia Lawson paced the Jays with 24 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

Stat Sheet: The Rangers held Elizabethtown to 34.5 percent shooting; however, the Blue Jays held a 42-34 rebounding advantage and outscored the hosts 17-6 at the foul line.
