BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Drew University softball team traveled to Moravian College for its Landmark Conference (LC) opener on Saturday and ended up on the short end of both games. The Rangers (4-8, 0-2 LC) lost 12-1 in the opener before falling 10-0 in the nightcap as both games were called after five innings.
Highlights
• In the opener, Drew scored a run in the second inning to make it a 4-1 game when sophomore
Adriana Rodriguez ripped a one-out single before scoring an an error. However, Moravian starter Alexandria Scheeler allowed just two hits the rest of the way, and the Greyhounds (11-3, 2-0 LC) brought the eight-run rule into effect with eight runs over the second and third innings.
• Rodriguez added a single in her second at-bat and finished the game 2-for-2.
• Senior
Cara O'Leary came on in relief and retired four of the five batters she faced, with a hit batsman being her only blemish. Sophomore
Megan Hulmes (0-4) started and worked the first 3 2/3 innings.
• In the second game, the Rangers threatened early when sophomore
Jasmine Vera led off the game with a double; however, she ended up stranded at third.
• Trailing 7-0, Drew appeared to have something going in the fourth when senior
Katie Grodski and freshman
Paxtan Perry smacked back-to-back singles to start the inning, but Greyhound starter Paige Lesher retired the next three batters. The Greyhounds put up their final three runs in the bottom of the frame.
• O'Leary also came on in relief in the second game and tossed 3 2/3 innings. Sophomore
Stephanie Burns (1-3) started and pitched 1/3 of an inning.
Next Up
The Rangers play their home opener on Sunday, when they take on Middlebury College in a non-conference doubleheader starting at noon.
