MADISON, N.J. – Senior
Jayson Mitch roped a walk-off single in the nightcap and the Drew University baseball team earned a sweep of Haverford College in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Doc Young Field. Junior starting pitchers
Pete Violante and
Jeff Serin turned in stellar performances for the Rangers (7-6), who rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the seventh inning of the second game to win 4-3 after capturing the opener 4-2. Offensively, Mitch and junior
Max Felsenstein stroked four hits apiece on the day for the Blue and Green.
Â
Game 1 Highlights
• The Rangers spotted Violante an early 4-0 lead, scoring two runs apiece in the first and second innings. In the first, junior
Matthew Lange drilled an RBI-double before classmate
Jon Cocchio singled in a run. Mitch then launched a towering, two-run shot over the 380 sign in center to make 4-0.
• In the meantime, Violante was in complete command, retiring the first 11 batters of the game. His perfect game was broken up with a two-out single in the fourth, but he would blank the Fords through the first six innings.
• Haverford (7-6) plated two unearned runs in the sixth, then threatened in the seventh, putting runners at the corners with one out. But Violante (1-0) escaped, striking out the final two batters of the game.

Game 2 Highlights
• The nightcap was a pitcher's duel early on, with a solo homer from Haverford's Jared Turner in the second marking the lone run over the opening four innings.
• Serin fanned the side in the first inning, and his domination would continue for the rest of his outing. He piled up a career-high 13 strikeouts, tying him for fifth in school history, in just seven innings of work.
• The Fords touched Serin for two runs on three singles in the fifth to make it 3-0, but Serin escaped further damage when he struck out a batter looking to end the inning with a runner on second.
• Haverford's Nathan Bass blanked the Rangers and allowed just two hits over the first six innings. But he was chased by a leadoff single from sophomore
Cole Bosch in the seventh.
• Freshman
Shane Benson and Felsenstein followed up with infield singles to load the bases before junior
Jon Cocchio was hit with the bases loaded. Then with two outs, junior
Matthew Lange lifted a two-run single into centerfield to tie the game. The Rangers nearly won it on an
Eric DiPietro single one batter later, but Haverford threw out the potential game-winning run at the plate.
• Eventual winner, senior
Davis Fouts (1-1), tossed a scoreless eighth before junior
Brian Dagostino continued Drew's comeback with a leadoff single in the bottom of the frame. Felsenstein drew a two-out walk before Mitch pulled the first pitch through the right side, scoring Dagostino without a play at the plate.

Top Performers
• Violante worked his first career complete game, tossing a four-hitter while striking out seven and walking none.

Ryan Fitzpatrick struck out 14 versus Juniata College on April 2, 2016.
• Felsenstein finished 4-for-6 with a pair of runs scored for the Rangers while Mitch went 4-for-9 with three RBIs and two runs. Both players finished 3-for-4 in the opener. Bosch added three hits for the day.
