Softball Pounds 18 Hits, But Drops a Pair in Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Drew University softball team stroked 18 hits, but came up on the short end of a pair of games on Thursday during the team's Spring Break trip to Florida. The Rangers (3-5) lost 8-6 in a back-and-forth affair with Albion College before dropping an 8-3 decision to Penn State Altoona.
 
Game One Highlights
• The Rangers trailed 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, when they tied it up with a six-hit inning. Freshman Kaylie Kaffl evened the score with a two-run single.
• Drew pulled ahead in the fifth, when senior Katie Grodski delivered an RBI-double to make it 5-4.
• The Britons reclaimed the lead with a four-run sixth.
• Kaffl doubled in a run in the bottom of the inning to pull the Rangers within 8-6, but Albion would retire the side in order in the seventh.

Game Two Highlights
• Penn State Altoona took advantage of four Drew errors in the first inning to open up a 4-0 lead.
• The Rangers chipped away with single runs in the second, third, and fifth innings before the Lions rallied with four runs over the sixth and seventh to set the final score.

Top Performers
• Freshman Madi Precht and Grodski each went 4-for-7 with a pair of stolen bases on the day. Precht also scored three runs.
• Kaffl and sophomore Sophie Sirota cracked three hits apiece.
• Sophomore Megan Hulmes pitched a complete game in the opener, allowing only two earned runs.
• Freshman Emilee Marshall made her first career start in the second game and also went the distance while yielding just a pair of earned runs.

Next Up
The Rangers close out their Spring Break trip with their final two games on Friday, taking on Penn State Altoona again at 9 a.m. and Martin Luther College at 11 a.m.
