MADISON, N.J - The Drew University men's tennis team lost a tough 5-4 decision to Landmark Conference rival Susquehanna University at the Drew Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon. The Rangers drop to 12-6 on the year with a 2-3 Landmark Conference mark, while the River Hawks improve to 12-3 and 3-2 in conference play.
The No. 1 doubles tandem of senior
Vineet Vemulapally and junior
Geoffrey Diehl notched the lone doubles point for the Rangers, besting their opponents 8-1.
After Drew fell behind 2-1 after doubles play, Vemulapally evened the score at 2-2 following a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at the No. 1 singles position. Soon after, Diehl was victorious at the No. 3 slot, posting a 6-4, 6-0 victory. Junior
Karel Raska defeated his opponent at the No. 5 flight, 6-4, 6-0, to push Drew's lead to 4-3.
The River Hawks rallied, however, winning the final two matches of the day at the No. 4 and 6 positions, respectively. The team score was tied 4-4 when Drew's
Bryce Kennedy and Susquehanna's Ryan Seibert split sets. Kennedy had won the last three games of the second set, then proceeded to win the first two games of the third set while dealing with a leg injury. But the injury grew worse and Kennedy was unable to finish.
Drew continues its season on Saturday, when it hosts John Jay College at 10 a.m. in a non-conference match and Elizabethtown College at 1 p.m. in a Landmark Conference tilt.
