Women's Hoops Downs Juniata for Best Start in Team History

MADISON, N.J. - Freshman guard Joey Meyers posted 19 points, 14 rebounds, and four steals and the Drew University women's basketball team is off to its best start in program history (through 13 games) following a 72-55 Landmark Conference (LC) victory over Juniata College Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.

The Rangers (10-3, 1-1 LC) set the tone early, outscoring the Eagles 25-10 in the opening quarter. Drew led for all but 1:54 in the game.

The 2009-10 and 2004-05 teams owned the previous best start through the same juncture at 9-4.

Meyers shot 7-for-9 from the floor while posting her second-highest scoring total of the season. Her 14 boards were a season-high.

Junior guard Julia Ramos added 14 points and six assists for the Rangers while junior center Erin Frederick also scored 14 points. Sophomore forward Cecelia Kracht also enjoyed a big game with nine points, eight rebounds, and a career-high six blocked shots. Additionally, sophomore guard Micela Genua dished out a career-high four assists while sophomore forward Lauren Cruse grabbed six rebounds.

Gracie Stauffer recorded 18 points, 19 rebounds, and four steals to lead the Eagles (3-10, 0-2 LC).

The Rangers took control of the game with an 11-0 run early in the first quarter. Ramos started the spurt with a conventional 3-point play before Kracht, Meyers, and Frederick all scored during the stretch to make it 14-4 with 6:44 on the clock. Drew dug in defensively late in the quarter, holding the Eagles to just four points over the last five minutes to assume its 15-point lead at the end of the stanza. The Rangers shot 66.7% (8-12) in the period.

The hosts nudged their lead to 17 early in the second quarter, but Juniata climbed back into it late in the period and trailed just 33-24 at the half.

The Eagles continued their comeback early in the third quarter and trailed just 35-29 after a Grace Long 3-pointer with 6:57 left. But the Rangers answered with a 9-0 run to go up by 15. Ramos, Frederick, Meyers, and sophomore Lauren Cruse all scored during the big run, and the Rangers led 52-35 heading into the fourth quarter.

Drew's lead reached 21 (56-35) after it scored the first two buckets of the fourth quarter on a jumper from senior guard Aly Axman followed by a steal and lay-up from Ramos. The two sides would play nearly even the rest of the way, as the lead hovered between 16 and 22.

The Rangers continue Landmark Conference play on Wednesday, when they visit Susquehanna University in a 7 p.m. tip-off.
