MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's basketball team outscored Moravian 25-10 in the fourth quarter, lifting the Rangers to a 64-49 Landmark Conference (LC) victory Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.
Freshman guard
Joey Meyers (20 points, 10 rebounds) and sophomore forward
Sekya Campbell (15 points, 12 rebounds) each posted a double-double to lead the Rangers (12-4, 3-2 LC), who have recorded the best record through 16 games in team history. Junior guard
Julia Ramos contributed 12 points - all in the second half - while dishing out six assists while sophomore forward
Cecelia Kracht tied a career-high with six blocked shots.
Nadine Ewald led the Greyhounds (9-7, 2-3 LC) with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The Rangers held Maddie Capuano, the leading scorer in the Landmark Conference, to nine points - 10 below her season average entering the night.
Neither team led by more than four in a tight first quarter, which featured four ties and two lead changes. Moravian led 10-6 before the Rangers ended the period on a 7-0 run to go up 13-10 heading into the second quarter.
Drew pushed its lead to six on three occasions in the second half, only to see the Greyhounds put together a 9-2 run late in the stanza to assume a three-point lead with 34 seconds remaining. However, Campbell dropped in a lay-up with three ticks showing and Moravian led 27-26 at the break. Campbell (10 points, five rebounds) and Meyers (eight points, seven rebounds) each turned in a big first half.
The Rangers again pushed their lead back to six midway through the quarter, but again Moravian had an answer, using a 7-0 run to go up 36-35 with 3:42 on the clock. The Greyhounds would score the final three points of the quarter and it was a 39-39 game heading into the final period.
Drew led 43-41 with 8:25 left, but that's when the Rangers broke it open with a 10-0 run. Junior center
Erin Frederick scored a pair of buckets during the surge, and her lay-up with 4:59 to go made it 53-41. The Rangers would lead by at least 10 the rest of the way.
The hosts settled any doubt with a late 8-1 run, capped by three-straight fastbreak lay-ups in which Meyers finished off an outlet pass from Ramos.
The Rangers return to Baldwin Gym on Saturday, when they take on Elizabethtown College in another Landmark Conference tilt.
