MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's basketball team battled back from a late 10-point deficit, but the Rangers comeback fell just short in a 79-76 loss to Elizabethtown College in Landmark Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.
Junior center
Erin Frederick scored 20 points on 10-of-12 shooting to go with three blocked shots for the Rangers (12-5, 3-3 LC) while sophomore forward
Sekya Campbell posted her second-straight double-double, scoring a career-high 19 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Freshman guard
Joey Meyers added 15 points while junior guard
Julia Ramos contributed 10 points and nine assists for Drew, which shot a season-best 60.0% from the field.
Angie Hawkins scored 25 points to lead the Blue Jays (9-7, 5-1 LC) while Lydia Lawson notched 17 points and 10 assists.
Drew trailed 70-60 with 2:58 before Campbell provided a spark, grabbing a rebound and going the length of the floor for a lay-up. She knocked down a pair of free throws with 1:45 remaining to make it 70-64.
Meyers pulled the Rangers to within five (72-67) when she drilled a triple with 1:26 left, and after a pair of E-town free throws, sophomore guard
Brooke Timinski drained a trey of her own to make it 74-70 with 40 seconds to go.
The Rangers continued to pull closer down the stretch, including a driving lay-up from Ramos with 27 seconds remaining. She subbed out briefly with an injury before Timinski stepped in to hit the and-1 free throw to make it 75-73 with 25 seconds left.
Lawson made two free throws with 24 seconds left for E-town before sophomore guard
Micela Genua knocked down two foul shots 10 seconds later for Drew to make it 77-75.
The Blue Jays were hit with a technical foul after calling a timeout they did not have while inbounding the ball at midcourt. Meyers went 1-for-2 at the line to make it a one-point game before Lawson was fouled again with four seconds left. She hit both shots, and a desperation 3-pointer from Ramos was short at the buzzer.
The Rangers had the upper hand early, leading by as much as 11 in the first quarter. But the Blue Jays climbed back into it with a 10-0 run that cut the gap to one with 6:49 left in the second period, and Drew led 30-29 at the half.
Drew pushed its lead back up to seven midway through the third quarter, only to see the visitors rally with a 16-1 run that gave them an eight-point lead. However, the Rangers answered with a 7-0 spurt and trailed just 57-54 heading into the final stanza.
A lay-up from Frederick with 4:11 to go made it a five-point game (60-55), but the Blue Jays scored the next five points, setting up Drew's rally.
The Rangers return to Landmark Conference action on Wednesday, when they visit 15th-ranked Scranton at 7 p.m.
