Erin Frederick scored 19 points while sophomore guard
Sekya Campbell notched her third-straight double-double, but 15th-ranked Scranton used a pair of first-half runs to hand the Rangers a 64-53 loss in Landmark Conference women's basketball action Wednesday evening.
The Royals (15-3, 5-2 LC) opened the game on a 13-3 run over the opening five minutes, but the Rangers (12-6, 3-4 LC) nearly played them even the rest of the way.Â
Frederick shot 8-for-14 en route to her big night while Campbell finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard
Julia Ramos just missed a double-double as well, posting nine points and nine assists while becoming just the sixth player in school history to exceed 300 career assists. Freshman guard
Joey Meyers notched six points and seven rebounds while sophomore forward
Cecelia Kracht registered seven boards and three blocked shots.
Makenzie Mason paced Scranton with 15 points.
After the Royals big opening run, Ramos and Campbell each converted a bucket to pull to Drew to within six, and Campbell scored again with 51 seconds left. The Rangers trailed just 15-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Drew scored the first four points of the second quarter to make it just a two-point game. Ramos connected on a jumper before Frederick dropped in a lay-up that made it 15-13 less than a minute into the stanza. However, that's when the Royals embarked on another big run, this time reeling off 15 straight points to open up a 17-point lead with 3:50 left in the half.
The Rangers bounced back once again, however, scoring the next 10 points to make it a seven-point game. Five different players scoring during the surge, and Drew trailed just 32-23 at the half.
Scranton nudged its lead back to 15 early in the third quarter, only to see the Rangers go on an 8-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Ramos, that cut the deficit to 46-39 with 1:42 on the clock. The Royals led 48-39 heading into the final stanza.
Drew continued to battle into the final quarter, and six straight points from Frederick pulled the visitors to within eight (56-48) with 3:59 showing. However, Mason answered with a big 3-pointer, and the Rangers were unable to pull closer than 11 down the stretch.
The Blue and Green continue their season on Saturday, when they visit Juniata in another Landmark Conference tilt starting at 4 p.m.
