Women's Hoops Earns Landmark Conference Victory at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Drew University women's basketball team held off a fourth-quarter rally and defeated host Juniata College 73-70 in a Landmark Conference (LC) match-up Saturday afternoon.

The Rangers led by 11 early in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles pulled to within one in the final minute. But sophomore guard Sekya Campbell grabbed a big offensive rebound and hit a pair of clutch free throws with 17 seconds left and Drew stopped Juniata on its last two possessions.

Junior center Erin Frederick scored 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting for Drew (13-6, 4-4 LC), which has now posted its best record through 19 games in team history. Campbell finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds, good for her fourth-straight double-double and her sixth of the season. She scored Drew's final five points of the game.

Freshman guard Joey Meyers also notched a double-double - her fourth of the season - with 13 points and 10 rebounds while junior guard Julia Ramos contributed a strong all-around performance with 14 points, eight assists, and four steals.

Gracie Stauffer notched 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead Juniata (4-15, 1-7 LC).

The Rangers never trailed and were on fire in the opening quarter, bolting out to a 26-13 lead over the opening 10 minutes when it shot a red-hot 75% (12-16) from the field. The visitors closed the quarter on a 9-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Brooke Timinski with three seconds left.

Juniata climbed back into it in the second quarter, when it outscored the Rangers 24-14. The Eagles opened the quarter on a 9-0 run, cutting the gap to 26-24 with 6:41 left and prompting a Ranger timeout. Drew answered with the next four points, but Juniata kept it close and trailed just 40-37 at the half.

The Rangers opened up some breathing room in the third quarter, outscoring the hosts 18-9 to assume a 58-46 lead heading into the final period. But the Eagles started the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run to make it a four-point game with 6:41 left.

Ramos nailed a 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down with just under six minutes to go, and Campbell converted a driving lay-up less than a minute later to nudge the lead back to eight (65-57). But Juniata answered with the next seven points, pulling to within one.

Meyers stemmed the rally when she drained a 3-pointer from the left elbow with 2:57 remaining. Leonard answered with a 3 at the other end to make it 68-67, but Campbell dropped in a fast-break lay-up with 1:40 to go. She hit a free throw for a conventional 3-point play to make it 71-67.

The Rangers missed a pair of free throws with 51 seconds left, and Gracie Long drilled a 3-pointer from the left elbow with 46 seconds left, pulling the Eagles to within 71-70 and setting up Campbell's big rebound and free throws.

Drew concludes a three-game road trip on Wednesday, when it visits Moravian at 7 p.m. in a Landmark Conference affair.
