BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Moravian scored on a put-back with 1.3 seconds left and the Greyhounds edged the Rangers 60-58 in a Landmark Conference (LC) women's basketball match-up Wednesday evening in Johnston Hall.
Drew (13-7, 4-5 LC) advanced the ball following a timeout, and freshman guard
Joey Meyers hauled in a lob pass into the paint. She got off a shot just before the buzzer, but the ball bounced off the front of the rim as time expired.Â
Junior guard
Julia Ramos led the Rangers with 20 points, including 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc, while Meyers posted 13 points and five rebounds. Junior centerÂ
Erin Frederick added nine points while sophomore guard
Sekya Campbell contributed six points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore forward
Cecelia Kracht notched seven rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
Kayla Yoegel scored 20 points, including the game-winning bucket, for the Greyhounds (12-8, 5-4 LC).Â
Moravian outscored the Rangers 16-8 to open the game, but that would prove to be the biggest lead of the night for either team. Ramos cut into the gap with a 3-pointer before Campbell converted a lay-up with 52 ticks showing, making it 17-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Drew took its first lead of the game (18-17) after Frederick scored the first five points of the second quarter. It kicked off a big period for the Rangers, who would outscore the hosts 22-14. Ramos knocked down a pair of triples in the final three minutes of the half, including a trey with 52 seconds left, to give the Rangers a 35-31 advantage at the intermission.
The second half was just as close, as neither team led by more than five. The two sides combined for just 23 points in the third quarter, when Moravian outscored Drew 13-10. But the visitors scored the last four points of the period on a pair of free throws from Ramos and a put-back from Meyers at the buzzer, giving Drew a 45-44 lead.
The Greyhounds pulled ahead by five (54-49) with 5:09 to go, but the Rangers erased the deficit in less than a minute, getting a 3 from Meyers and a pair of foul shots from Frederick to make it 54-54 with 4:10 remaining. Meyers would tie the game on a lay-up twice down the stretch, with her final basket making it 58-58 with 1:12 to go. The two sides came up empty on their next possession before Yoegel's game-winning shot.
The Rangers return home on Saturday, when they host Goucher at 4 p.m. in another Landmark Conference affair.
