Fast Start Propels Rangers Past Goucher

MADISON, N.J. - Drew outscored Goucher 24-11 in the first quarter en route to an 83-47 Landmark Conference (LC) victory Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.

The Rangers (14-7, 5-5 LC) never trailed the entire game and shot 56.1% from the field, marking the squad's second-highest mark of the season.

Drew has now posted its best record through 21 games in team history.

Junior guard Julia Ramos led a balanced scoring effort for Drew, netting 15 points, while sophomore guard Sekya Campbell notched 14 points and four steals. Junior center Erin Frederick shot 5-for-6 from the field and finished with 13 points while freshman guard Gwen Alberici made 5-of-6 shots and contributed 10 points and three steals off the bench.

Freshman guard Joey Meyers posted seven points and eight rebounds, and sophomore forward Cecelia Kracht blocked four shots. Senior guard Lisa Cappiello dished out four assists.

All 17 Rangers who dressed entered the game, and 12 different players scored a point.

Kyani Quarles paced the Gophers (5-16, 1-9 LC) with 15 points and eight rebounds.

The Rangers took control right from the opening tip, outscoring Goucher 11-3 to start the game. Meyers scored the first five points of the game while Frederick capped the run with the final four points.

Drew led 16-7 with 4:39 on the clock before running off eight unanswered points to open up a sizable 24-7 advantage. The Gophers scored the last four points of the quarter to close to within 13.

The Rangers scored the first six points of the second quarter, pushing their lead to 19. Goucher cut the deficit to 12 midway through the half, but Drew halted the rally with another 8-0 run, capped by back-to-back lay-ups from Campbell. The Rangers led 40-21 at the intermission.

Drew settled any doubt in the third quarter, when it outscored Goucher 14-0 to start the period. The Rangers pushed their lead to 63-33 after three quarters of play and led by as much as 38 in the final stanza.

The Blue and Green return to Baldwin Gym on Wednesday, when they host Susquehanna starting at 7 p.m. in another Landmark outing.
