Late Defense Lifts Rangers Over Susquehanna

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's basketball team shut out Susquehanna over the final two minutes and the Rangers defeated the River Hawks 63-56 in a tightly-contested Landmark Conference (LC) affair Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.

With the win, the Rangers (15-7, 6-5 LC) moved up a spot in the conference standings and are now tied with Moravian for fourth place.

Junior center Erin Frederick posted 15 points and three steals to lead Drew while freshman guard Joey Meyers added 14 points, including a big 3-pointer down the stretch, and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Sekya Campbell recorded 10 points and eight rebounds, none bigger than her two defensive boards in the final 17 seconds.

Freshman guard Katrina Wojtowicz helped carry the Rangers early with a big performance off the bench, posting all of her 13 points and three blocked shots in the opening half. She enjoyed a perfect night shooting, going 5-for-5 and 3-for-3 from behind the arc.

Junior guard Julia Ramos added seven points and five assists while sophomore forward Cecelia Kracht came up with four steals.

Drew has also tied the second-highest victory total in program history, trailing only the 2003-04 team that finished 16-10.

Sadie Comfort made six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 20 points to lead Susquehanna (13-9, 5-6 LC).

The Rangers led by seven early in the fourth quarter, but the River Hawks rallied to tie the game on a 3 from Erin McQuillen with 4:33 showing. McQuillen gave the visitors the lead (56-55) with a free throw at the 2:09 mark, but that would prove to be Susquehanna's final point of the night.

Frederick dropped in a lay-up with 1:57 showing with what held up as the go-ahead bucket. On the Rangers' next possession, Meyers drained her clutch 3-pointer from the right elbow to make it a four-point game with 1:24 left.

At the other end of the floor, the Rangers stopped the River Hawks on their final four possessions. Frederick drew a foul and split a pair of free throws to make it 61-56 with 29 seconds to go before Campbell took over, rebounding Susquehanna's final two missed shots while scoring the team's final points at the foul line.

The Hawks led by as much as five in the first quarter and carried a 13-10 lead into the second period. The visitors enjoyed their largest lead of the game after a trey from Comfort made it 19-12 with 7:31 left in the first half, but that's when the Rangers found their offense. After Ramos drained a 3, Wojtowicz stepped up and scored her team's next eight points, capped by a triple that gave Drew a 23-21 lead with 1:43 showing.

Freshman guard Gwen Alberici completed a 13-2 Ranger run with a fastbreak lay-up that gave Drew a four-point lead before Wojtowicz closed the half with an exclamation point, drilling a 3 with 31 seconds left to give her team a 28-24 lead at the break.

The Rangers maintained their lead throughout the third quarter and closed the period on a 7-1 run to open up a 46-38 advantage, setting up the tight finish.

The Blue and Green play their final road game of the regular season when they visit Elizabethtown on Saturday at 4 p.m. in another Landmark Conference tilt.
