Rangers Rally, But Fall to Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Drew University women's basketball team rallied, but came up on the short end of a 72-61 decision at Elizabethtown in Landmark Conference play on Saturday afternoon.

With two games to go in the regular season, the Rangers (15-9, 6-6 LC) are now in fifth place in the Landmark Conference standings, trailing Moravian for fourth place by just one game.

Freshman guard Joey Meyers turned in a big performance for the Rangers, posting her fifth double-double of the season with a season-high 24 points to go with 13 rebounds. Freshman guard Katrina Wojtowicz added a season-high 14 points off the bench while junior guard Julia Ramos contributed eight points and 10 assists, which tied her career-high.

Mikayla Ruth led the Blue Jays (12-10, 8-4 LC) with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

It was a close game in the early going before E-town scored nine straight points midway through the first quarter to open up a 19-8 lead with 2:40 on the clock. The hosts led 24-12 at the end of the opening stanza and pushed their lead to as much as 18 (38-20) with 4:03 to go in the first half. It was a 41-27 game at the break.

The Rangers climbed back into it in the third quarter, when they outscord the Jays 17-10. A 3-pointer from senior guard Aly Axman made it a seven-point game (45-38) with 4:33 left in the quarter before sophomore guard Sekya Campbell dropped in a lay-up with 2:06 showing to  cut the deficit to six (48-42) with 2:06 left. Elizabethtown carried a 51-44 lead into the fourth quarter.

Wojtowicz hit a jumper 10 seconds into the quarter to slice the lead to five, but that turned out to be as close as Drew would get. Meyers canned a 3-pointer with 8:57 to go that made it a six-point game (55-49), but the Blue Jays answered with the next five points to push their lead back into double digits. The Rangers were unable to get closer than nine the rest of the way.

The Rangers finish out the regular season at home, taking on 16th-ranked Scranton on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before facing Catholic on Saturday at 2 p.m.
