Collins Breaks 3-Point Record, But Rangers Fall to Scranton

MADISON, N.J. - Senior guard Riley Collins broke the school record for career 3-pointers, but Scranton pulled away in the second half to hand the Rangers a 69-59 setback in a match-up between two of the top teams in the Landmark Conference (LC) Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym.

The two sides entered the night in a three-way tie for first place in the conference standings. The Royals (14-4, 6-1 LC) now find themselves alone in first while the Rangers (14-4, 5-2 LC) are tied for second with Susquehanna.

Collins achieved his milestone with 1:37 left in the first half, pulling up in transition from the top of the arc. His 3-pointer was the 244th of his career, one more than previous record holder Dan Pierce C'96 made from 1992-96.

For the night, freshman forward Howard McBurnie, Jr. posted his second double-double of the year with 13 points and a season-high-tying 12 rebounds to go with three steals and two blocked shots. Junior forward Lybrant Robinson added 13 points and three steals while Collins also scored 13 points. Senior guard Michael Boice chipped in with nine points on 4-of-5 shooting in his first career start.

Matthew Mancuso led the Royals with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks while Logan Bailey contributed 15 points.

Scranton scored the first four points of the game and held a slim lead for the first eight and a half minutes until a Collins jumper capped a 6-0 run that put the Rangers up 11-10. The game went back and forth over the remainder of the half until Drew put together a 7-0 run to go up by five. Freshman forward Michael Kane started the spurt with a jumper, then Robinson came up with a steal before going coast-to-coast for a dunk that put the crowd on its feet. Collins then drained his record-breaking 3 to make it 30-25, prompting a Scranton timeout.

After a Royal 3-pointer, McBurnie closed the half on a high note for the Rangers with a steal and fast-break dunk of his own with 32 second left, making it a 32-28 game at the break.

Scranton used some stingy defense to take back the lead early in the second half, as it held the Rangers to two points over the opening eight minutes. A 3-pointer from Jackson Danzig put the visitors up 39-34 with 12:00 to go, and back-to-back triples from Jack Brockett and Stephane Braunstein pushed it to 45-36 with 9:31 left.

The Rangers pulled to within five on a pair of occasions, the last coming on a put-back through contact from McBurnie with 5:04 left that sparked the crowd and made it 53-48. However, Scranton would score the next six points in just over a minute, and the Rangers were unable to get the deficit back into single digits the rest of the way.

Drew continues its season on Saturday, when it visits Juniata at 2 p.m. in a Landmark Conference affair.
