UNION, N.J. - The Drew University softball team opened its 2020 campaign with a pair of games at Kean University on Sunday.
The Rangers started the day with a 12-2 loss in five innings to Kean. Drew went on to bang out 10 hits in their second game, but lost 9-4 to New York University.
Sophomore
Renata Primmer, junior
Sophie Sirota, and junior
Jasmine Vera all finished 3-for-6 on the day to lead the Rangers at the plate.
Versus Kean, Drew jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomores
Madi Precht and
Paxtan Perry roped back-to-back singles before Precht eventually scored on a groundout from junior
Adriana Rodriguez.
The Cougars scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, then broke the game open with 12 unanswered runs over the next three innings.
The Rangers scored their final run in the fifth inning, when sophomore
MaKayla Sosa led off with a walk before coming around to score on a groundout by Precht.
In the circle, freshman
Bailey Comeau made her collegiate debut and tossed three innings, striking out four. Sophomore
Emilee Marshall also pitched one inning of relief.
The Rangers struck first against NYU as well, scoring a run in the top of the first. Primmer led off with a single and was bunted to second by Precht before eventually scoring on a single from Sirota.
The Violets put up six answered runs from the first through the fourth innings before Drew rallied in the sixth. The first five batters all reached base, starting with a leadoff single from Vera followed by back-to-back RBI-doubles from sophomore
Julia Sinatra and freshman
Gianna Palmieri. Freshman
Caitlin Walsh and Primmer drew back-to-back walks before Precht made it 6-4 with a sacrifice fly. But NYU escaped without further damage, getting three straight outs to end the inning.
NYU padded its lead with a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, but the Rangers would not go quietly, as Sirota and Vera ripped back-to-back singles leading off the inning. But the Violets put out the rally with a game-ending double play.
Primmer and Vera each collected three hits for the Rangers while Sirota had two. Comeau started in the circle again and pitched five innings before freshman
Brianna Seals came on after the home run to fire a perfect inning.
The Rangers return to action March 1-6, playing 10 games during their Spring Break trip to Fort Myers, Fla.
