FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Drew University softball team ended the first day of its Spring Break trip on a high note, rallying from five runs down to beat Clark University 8-7 on Sunday afternoon.
The Rangers (1-3) opened the day with a 4-2 loss to Albion College.
Junior
Sophie Sirota led Drew offensively for the day, going 4-for-8 with a pair of doubles, while classmate
Adriana Rodriguez finished 3-for-6.
In the first game, the Rangers went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning on an RBI-double from Sirota, but Albion came back with four runs over the second and third innings, including a three-run third. Drew pulled to within 4-2 with a run in the fourth and threatened over each of the final three innings. In the seventh, the Rangers had the go-ahead run on base after they loaded the bases with one out, but reliever Ashley Pion came on to get the final two outs to earn a save.
Freshman
Bailey Comeau blanked the Britons over her final three innings and allowed just one earned run on the day. She struck out eight.
Sirota and junior
Jasmine Vera each collected two hits versus Albion.
Versus Clark, the Cougars jumped out to a 5-1 lead over the first two innings. Rodriguez drove in a run in the first inning with a single for Drew.
Clark pushed across another run in the top of the fourth to make it 6-1 before the Rangers scored once in the bottom of the inning when Sirota hit a leadoff double and scored on a two-out single from sophomore
MaKayla Sosa.
The Cougars scored their final run in the fifth before the Rangers mounted their comeback that started with a four-run fifth in which they sent 10 batters to the plate. Sophomore
Madi Precht and Sirota each stroked run-scoring singles before Vera drew a bases-loaded walk. Sosa added another RBI-single to make it a 7-6 game.
In the sixth, sophomore
Renata Primmer sparked the Rangers with a leadoff single. Rodriguez singled two batters later before pitching wildness hurt the Cougars. Sophomore
Paxtan Perry was hit with a pitch to load the bases, and Vera was also hit to bring home Primmer with the tying run. Sosa then drew a bases-loaded walk that brought home Rodriguez with the go-ahead run.
In the meantime, the sophomore starter
Emilee Marshall settled in two shut out Clark over the final two innings. In the seventh, the Cougars put the tying run on second after a one-out walk and stolen base, but Marshall induced a pair of flyouts to end the game.
Sosa finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs while Primmer and Sirota each collected two hits and two runs.
Marshall (1-0) scattered 12 hits to earn a complete-game win. Only four of her runs were earned, and she struck out two.
The Rangers continue their six-day, 10-game trip on Monday, when they play Finlandia at 9 a.m. and Kenyon at 1 p.m.
