Rangers Rally, But Fall to Scranton in Landmark Semifinals

MADISON, N.J. - Drew wiped out a 16-point first-half deficit, but third-seeded Scranton pulled away down the stretch for a 93-81 victory over the second-seeded Rangers in the Landmark Conference Men's Basketball Championship semifinals Wednesday evening at a jam-packed Baldwin Gym.

The Rangers (20-6) will now hope for a possible berth in the NCAA Division III or ECAC Tournament. Both fields will be announced on Monday.

Senior guard Riley Collins led the Rangers with 21 points and five assists while becoming just the second player in school history to surpass 1,900 career points.

Junior forward Lybrant Robinson added 17 points for the Rangers while freshman forward Howard McBurnie, Jr. contributed 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Sophomore guard David Gervase posted 10 points while junior forward Malachi Walker, Jr. chipped in with eight points, five rebounds, and a pair of blocked shots.

Logan Bailey scored 31 points to lead Scranton (19-7), which shot 57.1% from the field, including 47.6% (10-21) from 3-point range. Matthew Mancuso notched 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Royals, who move on to the Landmark Conference final to face top-seeded Susquehanna on Saturday.

Scranton led for nearly the entire first half after jumping out to a 13-4 lead. The Royals pushed their advantage to 16 on three occasions, the last coming at 35-19 midway through the period. But that's when the Rangers caught fire offensively, scoring 30 points over the rest of the half, starting with a 12-2 run that made it 37-31 with 7:29 showing. Walker sparked the rally with back-to-back 3-pointers from the left corner before sophomore guard Drew Gallagher dropped in consecutive lay-ups. Robinson completed the run with a fastbreak bucket.

The Royals nudged their lead back to 12 with 3:26 left, only to see Drew come back to tie the game with a ferocious 14-2 explosion that took less than three minutes. Collins and Robinson capped the run with back-to-back 3-pointers, tying the game at 49-all and bringing the crowd to fever pitch. The Royals hit a free throw with 16 seconds left to assume a 50-49 edge at the break.

Drew scored the first four points of the second half, but Scranton came back with a 10-2 run to push their lead to six (65-59) with 13:55 to go. The Rangers came back to tie the game (67-67) with 10:20 left, but were unable to reclaim the lead. A jumper from McBurnie pulled the Rangers to within two (73-71) with 8:19 remaining, but that's when Scranton went on an 8-0 run to go up by 10 with 5:40 to go, and it would lead by at least nine the rest of the way.
