FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Drew University softball team continued its torrid offensive display during its Spring Break trip to Florida with a pair of victories on Thursday.
The Rangers (5-5) opened with a 12-4, six-inning victory over Grove City before downing SUNY-Delhi 19-0 in five innings. Drew pounded out 33 hits on the day and is now hitting a robust .430 on their southern excursion.
Sophomore
Renata Primmer enjoyed a tremendous day at the plate, going 7-for-9, while juniors
Adriana Rodriguez and
Jasmine Vera each went 4-for-6. JuniorÂ
Sophie Sirota went 5-for-8 with two doubles and a home run.
Drew's win was never in doubt versus Grove City (1-6), as the Rangers bolted to a 10-0 lead after three innings. Playing the Wolverines for the second time in as many days, Drew scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the first. The Rangers blew it open with a six-run third that included four hits and three walks.
In the meantime, freshman
Bailey Comeau tossed four innings of shutout ball to open the game before the Wolverines scored four in the fifth to make it 10-4. The Rangers pushed across a run in the third before Sirota ended the game with a walk-off of sorts, blasting her first homer of the season to bring the eight-run mercy rule into effect.
Primmer finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Vera and sophomore
MaKayla Sosa collected two hits apiece.Â
Comeau (1-5) went the distance to earn her first career victory. She scattered nine hits while striking out four.
The Rangers set the tone early versus Delhi (2-2), which hurt itself with six errors. Drew struck for eight runs on eight hits and a walk in the top of the first.
Drew continued to pour it on the rest of the game and scored at least one run in each of the last four innings, including a six-run third that made it 16-0.
Freshman
Brianna Seals started in the circle for the Rangers and tossed her first career shutout, spinning a three-hitter. She struck out four and did not walk a batter.
Sirota finished 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs while Primmer also drilled four hits.
The Rangers conclude their trip on Friday, when they take on Lehman at 9 a.m. and North Central at 11 a.m.
