MADISON, N.J. - For the second time in as many games, freshman
Kevin Kiernan delivered the game winning goal for the Drew University men's soccer team as it beat the University of Scranton 1-0 in overtime during Wednesday's Landmark Conference tilt.
With the win, the Rangers improve to 6-7-1 on the season. More importantly, Drew is now 3-1-1 in the Landmark, giving them 10 points overall. This ties them with Susquehanna, Catholic and Elizabethtown, who all share identical 3-1-1 conference records. With each team having only two more conference matches left in the season, the battle for first place will come down to the wire.
Scranton, meanwhile, drops to 4-4-5 and 1-1-3 in conference play.
Wednesday's game was defined by impressive defensive showings from both squads. For Drew, senior goalkeeper
Calum Erlenborn was on point the entire match, going a perfect three-for-three on save attempts en route to his first shutout of the season.
The defense, led by seniors
Ryan LaRocca and
Dan Bacon and freshman
Corey Bethel, was equally as impressive, limiting the Royals to three shots on goal.
After both teams remained deadlocked through the end of regulation, things went into sudden death overtime. Enter Kiernan.
Already with seven shots (two on goal) on the day, it was only a matter of time before he finally found the back of the net. The golden moment finally came after junior
Lucas Portadin weaved through multiple defenders and made a short pass to Kiernan in front of the net. Without a moments hesitation, Kiernan fired to the right side just out of reach of the diving goalkeeper.
For Kiernan, this is his team-leading seventh goal of the season and his fourth game winner.
The Rangers are back in action this Saturday at 5 p.m. for their final home game of the season in a crucial Landmark Conference matchup with Elizabethtown.
