BETHLEHEM, Pa. - In its final game of the 2021 season, the Drew University women's soccer team captured a hard-fought 0-0 tie at Moravian University in a Landmark Conference (LC) tilt Saturday afternoon.
With the draw, the Rangers closed out the campaign with a 6-9-2 (1-4-2 LC) record. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds will advance to the postseason after finishing the year 6-4-4 (3-3-1 LC).
The name of the game was defense on Saturday, as both squads played to perfection in their own zones. For Drew, junior
Anthi Panayides started in goal and played all of the first half, while freshman
Amina Cirkiel took over in the second half and held things down through both overtime periods. Panayides was a perfect four-for-four on save attempts in the first half, while Cirkiel completely shut down Moravian's offense with seven saves on the day.
Most notably, three of Cirkiel's saves came with under three minutes left in the second overtime, including a crucial stop on a penalty kick with 59 seconds left.
For Panayides, the performance caps off an excellent season in which she made 48 saves in total. Cirkiel was quite successful over the course of the season as well, saving 42 shots in her rookie campaign.
The Rangers will say good bye to five graduating seniors:
Nichole Adams,
Ela Christensen,
Erin Fitzgerald,
Mary Laut, and
Madi Precht. All five made a substantial impact on the team over their careers and were honored with their Senior Day ceremony during last week's home finale.
