Joey Meyers and a game-high 19 points from senior guard
Sekya Campbell, the Drew University women's basketball team defended its Larry Horner C'40 Rose City Classic title with a 63-56 victory over Misericordia University Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.
Meyers finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds and was selected as the tournament MVP for the Rangers (3-0). She also registered an outstanding performance in the first round, when she posted 14 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists, and five steals in a 67-50 win over Neumann University.
Campbell, who also grabbed eight rebounds, shot 8-for-14 from the floor after scoring 15 points on 7-for-8 shooting in the first round.
Drew also won the Rose City title in 2019 - the last time it was held - and has now captured its home tournament in three of the last four years that it has been contested.
The Rangers fell behind 12-0 three and a half minutes into the game but quickly flipped the switch, reeling off 22 unanswered points over the next eight minutes to open up a 10-point lead early in the second quarter. Drew led 33-20 at the break and enjoyed a double-digit lead for nearly the entire second half.
Senior center
Erin Frederick added 13 points, five rebounds, and three blocked shots in the championship game while junior guard
Katrina Wojtowicz contributed 12 points on 4-of-8 3-point shooting. Junior guard
Gwen Alberici chipped in with with six assists and four steals.
Wojtowicz hit her second 3-pointer of the game to pull the Rangers even (12-12) with 3:15 on the first-quarter clock. Drew would score the final four points of the period on buckets from Frederick and Campbell to assume a 16-12 lead after one quarter of play.
The Rangers tacked on the first six points of the second quarter to push their lead double figures (22-12) The Cougars narrowed the deficit to four (22-18) midway through the quarter, but Drew answered with an 11-2 run to close the half and open up a 13-point lead.
The hosts continued to pull away in the third quarter and enjoyed their biggest lead of the game (52-29) with 3:06 left in the period. Drew led 52-33 at the end of the third quarter.
Misericordia put up one final run and ended the game on a 16-2 run but it was too little too late.
The Rangers continue their four-game home stand to open the season on Wednesday, when they host William Paterson University at 7 p.m.
