Frederick Hits 1000 as Rangers Win Season Opener

MADISON, N.J. - Senior center Erin Frederick scored her 1,000th career point as the Drew University women's basketball team earned a 65-48 victory over Stockton University in its season opener Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.

Frederick, who entered the game with 986 career points, reached the milestone on a lay-up early in the fourth quarter. She becomes the 13th player in team history to reach the milestone.

It was an all-around memorable day for Frederick, who led all players with 19 points while also grabbing nine rebounds. Junior guard Joey Meyers contributed 10 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists for the Rangers.

Drew posted its second-highest rebound total in team history with 62 boards on the day. The school record of 72 rebounds was set in an 80-36 win over Haverford College on Jan. 7, 2003.

Nalya Hill led the Ospreys (0-1) with 10 points and six rebounds.

The Rangers never trailed after scoring the first four points of the game. It was tied 6-6 midway through the opening quarter before Drew closed the period on a 7-0 run.

The hosts pushed their lead into double digits midway through the second quarter on a put-back from Frederick. It was part of a 9-1 run as the Rangers seized a 15-point advantage. The Blue and Green led 30-17 at the half.

Stockton briefly reduced the deficit into single digits, but the Rangers responded with an 11-3 run as their lead ballooned to 17 (41-24) with 3:53 left in the third quarter. The Ospreys answered with an 8-0 run, however, and they trailed 43-32 heading into the final frame.

Drew used a decisive 8-0 over the beginning of the fourth quarter to assume a commanding 19-point (51-32) lead. Frederick started the run with the bucket that gave her 1,000 points, then capped it with a fastbreak lay-up at the 5:50 mark. Stockton was unable to draw closer than 12 the rest of the way.

Junior guard Katrina Wojtowicz and sophomore forward Jamie Struble grabbed seven rebounds apiece for the Rangers while junior guard Gwen Alberici contributed five boards and a career-high six assists.

The Rangers continue their season next weekend, when they host the women's version of the Rose City Classic. The 30th annual event begins on Friday at 6 p.m., when Drew hosts Neumann University in the first round.
