MADISON, N.J. - The University of Scranton used a big third-quarter run to break open a close game and hand the Rangers a 75-60 loss in Landmark Conference (LC) women's basketball action Sunday afternoon in Baldwin Gym.
Drew (1-1, 1-1 LC) trailed by seven early in the third quarter before the Royals (2-0, 2-0 LC) ran off nine unanswered points to open up a 16-point lead. They led by at least 14 the rest of the way.
Junior guard
Sekya Campbell paced the Rangers with 14 points and eight rebounds while sophomore guard
Joey Meyers contributed nine points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Senior forward
Erin Frederick chipped in with 10 points.
Four players scored in double figures for Scranton, with Danielle McCurdy leading the way with 14 points. Kyra Quigley posted 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The game marked Drew's first home women's basketball game since the team's Senior Day, overtime victory over Catholic on Feb. 22 of last season.
With the Ranger coaching staff out due to COVID-19 protocols, new Assistant Coach
Bobby Timinski led the Rangers from the bench.
Scranton trailed for only 19 seconds in the first quarter, but it was a tight game throughout the period. The Royals scored the last four points to assume a 16-10 lead after 10 minutes of play.
The Rangers scored the first two buckets of the second quarter, getting a lay-up from Frederick and a jumper from Meyers to make it 16-14 with 8:49 left in the opening half. It was still a four-point game after Campbell dropped in a fast-break lay-up with 6:51 on the clock before the Royals used an 8-0 spurt to go up by 12. Drew battled back to cut the lead in half, however, with sophomore guard
Kyra Mann giving the Rangers some momentum when she buried a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the half to make it 34-28.
A pair of free throws from Campbell with 6:59 left in the third quarter made it a 41-34, but that's when Scranton answered with their 9-0 run. The Royals led 57-42 at the end of the period.
The two sides played to an 18-18 tie in the fourth quarter. The Rangers drew to within 14 midway through the period when Campbell converted another transition lay-up, but the Royals put it out of reach with a 10-2 run.
Drew returns home on Friday, when they take on Juniata College at 7 p.m. in another Landmark Conference tilt.
