Rangers Rally Past Juniata in OT

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Junior guard David Gervase hit a pair of key buckets down the stretch and the Drew University men's basketball team rallied for a 72-69 overtime victory at Juniata College in a Landmark Conference (LC) tilt Friday evening.

The Rangers (3-1, 3-1 LC) trailed 69-64 with 2:33 left before ending the game on an 8-0 run. Gervase scored the first six points of the spurt, starting with a pair of free throws that made it a three-point game. He then converted back-to-back lay-ups, including the go-ahead basket with eight seconds left that made it 70-69.

Junior guard Drew Gallagher then came up with a clutch steal, knocking the ball away from a driving Evan Eisenhart in the closing seconds. Gallagher came away with the ball and was fouled with one second left, and he nailed both free throws to set the final score.

Senior forward Lybrant Robinson led the Rangers with 20 points while Gervase (18 points) and sophomore forward Michael Kane (13 points) also reached double figures. Making his first career start, Gallagher finished with six steals and five assists.

Eisenhart led the Eagles (2-2, 2-2 LC) with 17 points.

It was a tight game in the first half, which featured six ties and seven lead changes. Juniata led by six with 7:23 left before the Rangers ran off the next seven points to go back in front. The Eagles led 27-25 at the break.

Drew was hot early in the second half, opening the period on a 19-5 run to assume a 44-32 advantage with 13:27 left. Senior guard Dylan Musial helped fuel the run with back-to-back 3-pointers.

Juniata rallied, however, and came all the way back to make it a one-point game (50-49) with 6:41 to go. A pair of Gervase free throws put the Rangers up 54-51, but the Eagles tied it with 1:32 left. However, Robinson knocked down a jumper six seconds later to put Drew up 59-57.

Nick Rigby converted a lay-up to pull Juniata even again with 1:04 left. The Eagles had a pair of potential game-winning shots blocked in the closing seconds, first by sophomore forward Howard McBurnie, Jr. with 14 seconds left, then by senior forward Malachi Walker, Jr. at the buzzer.

Juniata outscored the Rangers 8-4 over the opening two minutes of the extra session before Drew embarked on its comeback.

The two teams wrap up their season series on Sunday, when the Rangers host the Eagles at 4 p.m.
