Marymount Tops Men's Basketball in Season Finale

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University men's basketball team closed out its abbreviated 2021 season on Saturday in Baldwin Gym with an 82-63 loss to Marymount University in a non-conference match-up.

The Rangers, who captured the program's first Landmark Conference title a week ago, finish with a record of 7-2.

Sophomore forward Michael Kane led the Rangers with his first career double-double, posting career-highs of 16 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman guard Malcolm Newman added 16 points and seven rebounds for Drew while senior forward Malachi Walker, Jr. added 10 points. Junior guard Drew Gallagher contributed five assists.

Montell Cooper led all scorers with 18 points for the Saints (2-0) while Steve Etienne registered 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Rangers' lone departing senior, Jereme Johnson, was recognized in a brief ceremony before the start of the game. He went on to make his first career start and finished with five points, two rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

Drew's all-time leading scorer, Riley Collins C'20, returned to his former home court as an assistant coach for Marymount.

A pair of big first-half runs helped Marymount take control early. After a Kane 3-pointer made it 10-7, the Saints ran off 12 unanswered points to open up a nine-point lead with 8:40 to go. Later in the half, a 15-0 Marymount run pushed the visitors' lead to 22 with 2:28 left in the opening period. Drew outscored the Saints 8-2 over the remainder of the half and trailed 39-23 at the intermission.

The Rangers put a dent into the deficit midway through the second half, scoring eight straight points to make it a 10-point game (60-50) with 8:56 remaining. Freshman guard Andrew Turco sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around a Walker lay-up during the spurt. Marymount answered with a 9-0 surge, however, and the Rangers were unable to get closer than 15 the rest of the way.
