WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Drew University baseball team lost a pair of games at Catholic University in Landmark Conference (LC) action on Sunday to close out their season-opening four-game series.
The Cardinals (4-0, 4-0 LC) won the opener 14-3 and captured the nightcap 7-0 as three pitchers combined on a one-hitter.Â
Seniors
Tom Burr and
Nate Race led the Rangers offensively in the first game with hits apiece.
In the opener, the Cardinals jumped in front with seven runs over the first two innings. The Rangers got on the scoreboard in the third inning, when Race singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. But Catholic added seven more runs over the next five innings.Â
Drew scored singles runs in the fifth and seventh, getting an RBI-single from sophomore
Therein Moore in the seventh.
Senior
Kyle Tamburri started on the mound for Drew and tossed two innings before sophomore
Dylan Donohue pitched four frames. Sophomores
Gio DeGiglio (0.2 IP) and
Ryan Pittari (1.1 IP) finished it out on the mound.
Nate Lundholm led Catholic in the opener, going 4-for-4.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals scored single runs in the first and second innings to go up 2-0 against freshman starter
Owen Jaquette. Catholic then added five runs over the fourth and fifth innings, when a pair of Drew errors resulted in four of the runs being unearned.
Jaquette threw four innings in his collegiate debut, striking out three, before sophomore
Joseph Caggiano pitched the last two innings.
Nick Marini threw six innings of one-hit ball and struck out seven for Catholic.
The Rangers continue their season with another four-game Landmark Conference series next weekend, taking on Elizabethtown College. Drew travels to the Etown on Saturday before hosting the Blue Jays on Sunday, starting their doubleheaders at 12:30 p.m. each day.
