Women's Lacrosse Falls to No. 8 Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Rangers trailed by four with eight minutes remaining, but eighth-ranked Catholic University ended the game on a 5-0 run and the Cardinals handed the Rangers a 19-10 setback in Landmark Conference (LC) women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.

Drew (1-2, 1-2 LC), who outscored the Cardinals 4-1 to start the game, were led by graduate student Allie DiDario, who posted two goals, one assist, and 11 draw controls. Junior Hailey Simmons and freshman Lizzy Barrett also scored a pair of goals.

Kate Olsen posted four goals and three assists to lead Catholic, which was playing its season opener.

Simmons scored off an assist from DiDario with 21:32 on the clock to put the Rangers up 1-0. Senior Lauren Cassella and DiDario followed up with unassisted goals before Simmons struck again, this time off a helper from junior Jenna Draney to make it 4-1 with 9:16 remaining in the opening period.

The Cardinals answered with a 9-0 run spanning both halves, including a 5-0 spurt to end the first half and assume a 6-4 lead at the intermission. Catholic pumped in four more tallies to start the second period, pushing its advantage to 10-4 with 20:02 left.

The Rangers came back with consecutive goals from Barrett and DiDario before the Cardinals answered with a 3-0 spurt to make it 13-6.

Drew responded with a 3-0 run of its own after juniors Kendall Hartt and Leah Emini scored before Barrett converted a feed from Emini. The two sides then traded goals, with senior Charly Nolting scoring for the Rangers to make it 14-10 before Catholic's game-ending run.

Senior Katiana Michalski made four saves in goal for the Rangers while Nanci Hernandez stopped 12 shots for Catholic.

The Cardinals held a slim 33-32 edge in shots and won 17-of-31 draws.

Drew continues its season on Wednesday, when it visits Moravian College in another Landmark Conference tilt starting at 6 p.m.
