MADISON, N.J. - Sophomore
Bailey Comeau tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener and the Drew University softball team earned a split in a Landmark Conference makeup doubleheader with Susquehanna University on Wednesday afternoon at the Drew Softball Complex.
The Rangers (5-9, 5-9 LC) won the opener 3-0 before the River Hawks (6-4, 6-4 LC) captured the nightcap 11-4.
Comeau (4-4) was in command from the start and did not yield a hit until the fourth inning. She allowed just three baserunners through the first six innings and erased one of them with a 1-6-3 inning-ending double play in the sixth.
Susquehanna mounted its only serious threat in the seventh, loading the bases on two walks and a single with the Rangers leading 3-0. But Comeau induced a game-ending groundout to pick up her first collegiate shutout. She tied a season-high with six strikeouts.
Gabby Bubba blanked the Rangers through the first three innings before the hosts struck for all three of their runs in the fourth. Senior
Jasmine Vera led off with a towering double before juniors
Ciara Lyons and
Paxtan Perry each drew a two-out walk. Junior
MaKayla Sosa then lifted a two-run single into right-centerfield, making it 2-0, before freshman
Francesca Laurito drove in another run with infield single.
In the second game, the River Hawks jumped to a 6-0 lead after two innings of play. Drew got on the scoreboard with two runs on one hit and three walks in the third, but Susquehanna answered with three runs over the fourth and fifth to assume a 9-2 lead.
The Rangers pushed across two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but that's when reliever Kelly Murphy came on to get the final two outs of the inning. She went on to shut out the Rangers over the final two frames as well to earn the win out of the bullpen.
Junior
Emilee Marshall (0-2) started in the circle for Drew and worked one inning before giving way to sophomore
Brianna Seals, who threw the final six innings.
The Rangers continue their season on Saturday, when they visit 10th-ranked Moravian College at 2 p.m. in another Landmark Conference doubleheader.
