Comeau Ties School Record with 13 Strikeouts as Softball Splits on Senior Day

MADISON, N.J. - Sophomore Bailey Comeau fired a seven-hit complete game while tying a school record with 13 strikeouts in the opener, and the Drew University softball team split a Landmark Conference (LC) doubleheader with Juniata College on Saturday at the Drew Softball Complex.

The Rangers (6-10, 6-10 LC) won the opener 3-2 before the Eagles (6-12, 6-12 LC) prevailed 4-2 in the nightcap.

Drew's two seniors - Sophie Sirota and Jasmine Vera - were honored in a brief ceremony between games.

Coming off a three-hit shutout in her last time out, Comeau (5-4) struck out five more than her previous career-high while tying the former Drew standard set by Laura D'Ornellas C'15 versus Catholic in 2015. The reigning Landmark Conference Pitcher of the Week, Comeau struck out at least one batter in every inning and fanned the side in the third and fifth innings.

In the opener, the Rangers pushed across a run in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 1-1 before taking the lead in the fifth, scoring twice on two hits and two errors. Juniata pulled to within 3-2 in the sixth when it scored on a double steal with no outs, but Comeau left the potential go-ahead runner on second, striking out consecutive batters before inducing a flyout. She sealed the win with a three-up, three-down seventh.

Junior Madi Precht led Drew at the plate, finishing 2-for-3.

In the second game, the Eagles scored all four of their runs versus Ranger starter Brianna Seals in a four-hit third inning that was aided by a pair of errors. Drew added an unearned run of its own in the bottom of the inning, and it was a 4-1 game heading into the bottom of the seventh. After Juniata starter Catherine Miller got the first two outs, the Rangers rallied with three straight singles, with junior MaKayla Sosa driving in a run. But Miller ended the game with a groundout with the tying run on base.

Seals (1-3) pitched 2 2/3 innings and did not allow an earned run before giving way to Comeau, who blanked the Eagles while striking out three over 4 1/3 innings of one-hit ball.

The same two teams conclude their season series on Sunday, when they meet at Juniata in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
