Softball Splits at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Drew University softball team came away with a split in its Landmark Conference doubleheader at Juniata College on Sunday.

The Rangers won the opener 9-5 but dropped the nightcap 3-2.

Junior Renata Primmer finished 5-for-9 on the day for the Rangers, who outhit the Eagles 23-11. Senior Sophie Sirota and junior Madi Precht collected four hits apiece.

In the opener, Drew tied their season-high with 15 hits, including five doubles, en route to their season-high runs total. After the Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the first, Drew scored once in the fourth before breaking it open with a seven-run fifth, when 12 batters came to the plate. Freshman Madi Baldwin provided an RBI-double in the Rangers' big inning while freshman Francesca Laurito, Precht, and Primmer each had a run-scoring single.

Junior Paxtan Perry drilled a pair of doubles as part of a three-hit game while Baldwin and Sirota also had three hits.

Sophomore Bailey Comeau (6-4) started in the circle and went the distance, scattering five hits while striking out six.

In the nightcap, the Rangers scored their only runs of the game in the first inning. The Eagles answered with a two-run home run in the bottom of the frame, then pushed across what held up as the game-winning run in the bottom of the second.

Pitching dominated the rest of the game, as the two sides played scoreless ball over the last five innings. The Rangers threatened in the seventh, putting runners on the corners after junior Ciara Lyons reached on an error and Primmer singled down the rightfield line. But starting pitcher Catherine Miller induced a 6-3 groundout to end the game.

Primmer finished 3-for-4 to lead Drew at the plate. Freshman pitcher Carly Smith tossed five innings and struck out four while Comeau pitched a scoreless sixth.

The Rangers return to action on Wednesday, when they visit Moravian College at 3 p.m. in another Landmark Conference doubleheader.
