Softball Edged Twice by No. 9 Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Drew University softball team went toe-to-toe with ninth-ranked Moravian College in a Landmark Conference (LC) makeup doubleheader on Wednesday, but the undefeated Greyhounds (20-0, 16-0 LC) won both ends of the twinbill by scores of 4-1 and 6-3.

In the first game, sophomore Bailey Comeau blanked Moravian over the first three innings, when she allowed only two baserunners. The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, when junior Renata Primmer led off with a double and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from senior Jasmine Vera.

The Greyhounds rallied, however, scoring three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth before adding an insurance run in the fifth.

Comeau went the distance for Drew (7-13, 7-13 LC), scattering five hits and allowing just one walk.

In the second game, the hosts jumped to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. But the Rangers answered with a big inning of their own, pushing across three runs in the third. Sophomores Gianna Palmieri and Julia VanLiew led off with back-to-back singles before junior Madi Precht cleared the bases with a triple. She went on to score on a sacrifice fly from senior Sophie Sirota as the Rangers pulled to within 4-3.

Moravian padded its lead with singles runs in the fifth and sixth, however, and starting pitcher Meghan Bauer allowed just one baserunner over the last four innings.

Comeau (6-6) tossed another complete game in the nightcap.

The two teams close out their four-game series on Thursday in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. at the Drew Softball Complex.
