Baseball Swept in Doubleheader Versus Juniata

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader to Juniata College in Landmark Conference action on Monday at Doc Young Field.

The Eagles won 12-1 in the opener before capturing a 13-3 decision in the nightcap.

Sophomore Jake Welsh led the Rangers offensively, going 4-for-8 with a double and two RBIs over the twinbill.

Freshman Danish Nadeem and sophomore Gio DeGiglio each turned in solid relief outings. Nadeem tossed four scoreless innings in the opener before DeGiglio blanked the Eagles over 3 1/3 innings in the nightcap.

In the first game, Juniata raced out to a 7-0 lead, capped by a four-run fourth.

The Rangers got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth, when sophomore Matthew Kroll boomed a towering double to straightaway center and scored on a single from Welsh.

Nadeem came on in relief of starter Joseph Caggiano and shut out the Eagles from the fourth through the seventh. He allowed three hits and four hits while striking out a pair.

Juniata set the final score with a five-run ninth.

Welsh and senior Cole Bosch each finished 2-for-4 in the opener.

Drew struck first in the second game, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Kroll smacked another double and eventually scored on a single from freshman Joey Del Sol.

Juniata answered with an eight-run second and a five-run fourth. But they were unable to solve DeGiglio over the final three-plus innings. The left-hander allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out four.

Del Sol finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while Welsh also cracked two hits.

The Rangers return to Doc Young Field on Saturday, May 8, when they take on Elizabethtown College in a Landmark Conference makeup doubleheader.
