ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Senior
Michael McGeeney made 20 saves, but the Drew University men's lacrosse team lost 12-4 at Landmark Conference foe Elizabethtown College in the season opener for both teams on Saturday.
It was the second career 20-save performance for McGeeney, who also stopped 22 shots in a quadruple-overtime loss to Susquehanna University in 2018.
The Rangers trailed just 6-4 with 4:19 left in the third quarter before the Blue Jays ended the game on a 6-0 run.
Freshman
Michael Phillips scored two goals in his collegiate debut to lead the Rangers offensively while sophomore
Tommy Larmore handed out a pair of assists.
Brandon Sankey posted three goals and three assists for the Blue Jays.
Elizabethtown scored the only two goals of the first quarter before the Rangers got on the scoreboard with 12:37 left in the first half, when junior
Jack Tynan scored a man-down goal. Etown came back with two goals before Phillips struck with 44 seconds left in the period and Drew trailed 4-2 heading into the intermission.
The two sides traded goals to start the second half to make it 6-4. Phillips scored a man-up tally with 7:13 left in the third quarter before
David Burke struck for his first career with 4:47 remaining in the period. But the Blue Jays scored the final goal of the quarter to assume a 7-4 lead, then added five goals in the fourth quarter.
The Rangers continue their schedule on Wednesday, when they host Susquehanna in their home opener starting at 4:30 p.m.
