MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader to the University of Scranton on Monday in Landmark Conference (LC) play at the Drew Softball Complex.
The undefeated Royals (8-0, 8-0 LC) won the opener 17-0 in five innings before capturing a 7-1 decision in the second game.Â
In the first game, Scranton scored a run in each inning and opened up a 6-0 lead following a five-run second.Â
Sophomore
Brianna Seals started in the circle for Drew and pitched two innings before giving way to junior
Emilee Marshall worked the final three frames.
Jennifer Sweeney threw a one-hit shutout for the Royals.
The second game was a pitcher's duel early on between Scranton's Meaghan Dowdell and Drew sophomore
Bailey Comeau and it was a scoreless game after three innings of play. Comeau stranded a runner on second in each of the first three frames.
The Rangers threatened in the bottom of the third, when juniors
Paxtan Perry and
MaKayla Sosa ripped back-to-back singles before eventually moving to second and third. But Dowdell ended the inning with a ground ball back to herself.
Scranton broke through in the fourth, scoring four times on three hits and two walks. The bottom half was a replica of the previous inning, with Dowdell leaving runners on second and third following a 1-3 putout.
The Royals tacked on one in the fifth and two more in the sixth. However, Drew refused to go quietly and broke up the shutout in the seventh, when senior
Jasmine Vera led off with a walk before moving to third on a single from Perry. Vera would go on to score on a single from Sosa to set the final score.
Comeau worked a complete game and struck out a pair of batters. Perry and Sosa each finished with two hits.
The Rangers (4-8, 4-8 LC) return to the diamond on Saturday, when they kick off their series with Susquehanna University, visiting the River Hawks at 1 p.m.
