MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - The Drew University women's volleyball team continued its impressive start, nearly sweeping a tri-match on Saturday at Penn State Harrisburg in the team's first-ever road matches.
Three days after beating Bard College 3-0 in the program's inaugural match, the Rangers opened the day with a 3-0 sweep of Clarks Summit. Drew then opened up a 2-0 lead (25-19, 25-21) on Penn State Harrisburg, giving them eight straight set victories to start the year. However, the Lions rallied, winning 25-20 in the third set before forcing a fifth and deciding set with a 26-24 nailbiter in the fourth. Harrisburg clinched the match with a 15-11 victory in the fifth set.
Versus Clarks Summit, the Rangers served up an impressive 22 aces. Freshmen
Jasmine Butler,
Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro, and
Shelby Weeden led the way with five apiece while classmate
Lauren Gaza added four.
Offensively, sophomore
Melina Christodoulou paced Drew with 10 kills on 12 attempts for a stellar .750 hitting percentage. Camacho-Tenreiro added seven kills while Weeden and Butler passed out 18 and 16 assists, respectively. Gaza also contributed nine digs.
Against Penn State Harrisburg, Camacho-Tenreiro turned in the first double-double in team history, posting 15 kills and 20 digs. Christodoulou (11 kills) and freshman
Ashley Carkhuff (eight kills) also contributed offensively while Butler and Weeden dished out 17 assists each. Gaza racked up 31 digs to go with four aces.
The Rangers return to the court on Tuesday, when they visit William Paterson at 7 p.m. in a non-conference match.
