BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Playing for the first time in 13 days, the Drew University men's basketball team showed little signs of rust, cruising to a 102-70 victory at Moravian University in a Landmark Conference (LC) tilt Wednesday evening.
The Rangers (8-5, 2-0 LC), who won their fifth game in a row, took control right from the start, opening the game on a 13-0 run and racing out to a 49-30 halftime lead.
Drew dished out 33 assists - one shy of the school record set in 1984 - on their 40 field goals. Senior guard
Drew Gallagher, making his third career start, dished out a career-high eight assists.
Junior forward
Howard McBurnie, Jr. fronted a balanced scoring attack for Drew, finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds for his 11th double-double in 12 games this season. He also distributed a career-high six assists and blocked a pair of shots.
Five other Rangers reached double figures in scoring, including senior guards
Lybrant Robinson and
Miles Lewis, who netted 14 points apiece. Lewis also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out a career-high five assists. The pair combined to shoot a sizzling 12-for-15, with Robinson going 6-for-8 and Lewis finishing 6-for-7. As a team, Drew shot a season-best 58.8% from the field en route to its second 100-point game of the year.
Drew's bench also had a big night, scoring 53 points. Senior center
Malachi Walker, Jr. (13 points) and sophomore guard
James Anderson (12 points) led the Ranger reserves while senior forward
Mathew Capozzoli dropped in nine points in just eight minutes. Sophomore guard
Andrew Turco also contributed nine points.
Danny Cooper led all scorers with 18 points for the Greyhounds (5-7, 1-2 LC).
The Rangers needed just over three minutes to reel off the game's first 13 points, which included a steal and fastbreak slam from Robinson.
After Moravian closed the gap to 17-11, Drew responded with a big 11-0 run as their lead swelled to 17. Five different Rangers scored the team's five field goals during the stretch.
Drew's lead ballooned to 20 (35-15) after a dunk from Walker and a 3-pointer from Robinson with 6:40 on the clock. The Rangers continued their long-range assault over the remainder of the half, draining three more 3's as Drew assumed its 19-point lead at the break.
The Rangers were never threatened in the second half, when they led by at least 18 the entire way. After Moravian pulled to within 66-47 with 12:55 left, Drew settled any doubt with an 11-2 run. Anderson pumped in five points during the spurt.
Drew's lead reached as much as 37 as 15 players entered the game, including 11 who scored a point.
