Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 23 Catholic Hands Rangers First Loss of Season

WASHINGTON, DC - The Drew University women's basketball team gave 23rd-ranked Catholic University all it could handle, but the Cardinals pulled away in the closing minutes to hand the Rangers a 58-52 setback in Landmark Conference (LC) action Saturday afternoon.

Playing for the first time in 16 days, the Rangers (10-1, 1-1 LC) saw their school-record 10-game winning streak and best start in team history come to an end.

Senior center Erin Frederick led Drew with 17 points and six rebounds while reaching a career milestone. Her fourth rebound of the game was the 500th of her career, and she became just the third player in program history to reach 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 100 blocked shots.

Senior guard Sekya Campbell and junior guard Joey Meyers added 11 points apiece for the Rangers while senior forward Cecelia Kracht and sophomore forward Jamie Struble grabbed seven rebounds each.

Erin Doherty scored 21 points to lead Catholic (11-1, 2-1 LC).

The Cardinals scored the first six points of the game, but Drew came back with seven unanswered, capped by five straight points from Frederick. However, Catholic pushed its lead back to six later in the quarter and led 17-12 at the end of the period.

The Rangers rallied in the second quarter, tying the game on four occasions before closing the half on a 5-0 spurt to assume a 26-23 lead at the intermission.

Drew enjoyed its biggest lead of the game early in the third quarter, twice going up by six. A pair of Struble free throws gave the Rangers a six-point lead with 6:39 showing, but Catholic answered with an 8-0 run to go up 37-35 with 4:37 on the clock. The two sides accounted for just one basket apiece over the rest of the quarter and the Cardinals led 39-37 heading into the final period.

After trailing by five early in the fourth quarter, the Rangers used a 9-0 run, capped by a conventional 3-point play from Meyers, to assume a 48-44 lead with 6:33 left.

Drew still led by four (50-46) after a Campbell lay-up with 4:29 to go, and a baseline jumper from Frederick put the Rangers up 52-49 with 3:30 showing. However, those would turn out to be Drew's final points of the day, as Catholic closed the game with a 9-0 run. With the game tied 52-52, the Cardinals split four straight trips to the foul line before hitting a jumper with six seconds left to set the final score.

The Rangers open a three-game week on Monday, when they host Elizabethtown College at 4 p.m.
