Late Run Lifts Blue Jays Over Rangers

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's basketball team battled Elizabethtown College in a back-and-forth affair before the Blue Jays closed the game on a run, handing the Rangers a 70-59 Landmark Conference (LC) setback Monday evening in Baldwin Gym.

Junior guard Joey Meyers led the Rangers (10-2, 1-2 LC) with her seventh double-double of the season, posting a season-high 23 points to go with 11 rebounds and four assists. Senior forward Sekya Campbell contributed 13 points and six rebounds while senior center Erin Frederick netted 13 points to go with three blocked shots. Senior forward Cecelia Kracht added four blocks, and senior guard Micela Genua dished out four assists.

Summer McNulty posted 19 points, seven rebounds, and six assists to pace Elizabethtown (11-2, 3-0 LC).

The Rangers trailed by nine early in the fourth quarter, but rallied to within three on three occasions, the last coming on a jumper from senior guard Brooke Timinski that made it 59-56 with 2:50 left. However, that's when Veronica Christ hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Blue Jays a nine-point lead.

A put-back from Meyers made it 65-58 with 1:33 left, but a breakaway lay-up from Christ pushed the deficit back to nine. After a Drew turnover, McNulty hit a pair of free throws to put Etown up 69-58 with 45 seconds left. Each side split a pair of free throws the rest of the way to set the final score.

Neither side led by more than four in a tight first quarter, and the Blue Jays led 15-13 after 10 minutes of play. After Etown went up by eight with 3:35 left in the second quarter, the Rangers pulled to within three (31-28) after a 7-2 run that was capped by a conventional 3-point play from Meyers with 1:24 on the clock. However, the visitors closed the half on a 6-0 spurt to assume a nine-point lead at the intermission.

Drew rallied again in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 41-39 with 3:43 showing after Campbell scored four straight points. But Etown would end the quarter on a 10-5 run and carried a 51-44 lead into the final period.

After Campbell scored the first bucket of the fourth quarter, making it a five-point game, the Blue Jays scored the next four points, setting up Drew's comeback.

The Rangers continue a three-game week on Wednesday, when they travel to Susquehanna University in a Landmark Conference match-up starting at 7 p.m.
