Women’s Basketball Runs Past Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Drew University women's basketball team shot a season-best 54.1 percent from the field and posted its highest scoring output of the season in an 83-68 Landmark Conference (LC) victory at Susquehanna University Wednesday night.

The Rangers (11-2, 2-2 LC) outscored the River Hawks 27-18 in the second quarter to open up some breathing room, and they led by 11 at the half. Drew held off a brief rally in the third quarter, then pulled away in the final period, eventually leading by as much as 19.

Junior guard Joey Meyers led the Rangers with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists while posting her ninth double-double of the season. Senior center Erin Frederick added 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting while junior guard Kyra Mann posted a career-high 15 points to go with five assists. Senior guard Sekya Campbell added nine points and 10 rebounds coming off the bench while senior forward Cecelia Kracht blocked three shots.

Amanda Lemire scored 20 points to lead the River Hawks (8-5, 1-4 LC).

Neither side led by more than four in a tight first quarter, but junior guard Katrina Wojtowicz nailed a 3-pointer with 57 seconds that put the Rangers up 13-11 at the end of the period. The Rangers would not trail the rest of the way.

Leading 23-18 midway through the second quarter, the Rangers used a big 9-2 run to open up a 12-point lead (32-20) with 3:18 on the clock. Four different players scored during the run for Drew, which carried a 40-29 lead into the locker room.

The Rangers led by as many as 13 early in the third quarter, but a 6-0 Susquehanna surge cut the deficit down to six (44-38) with 6:49 on the clock. However, that's as close as the hosts would get, and Drew outscored the Hawks 14-7 over the rest of the quarter to open up a 58-45 lead heading into the final period.

The Rangers enjoyed at least a 12-point lead for the entire fourth quarter, and they settled any doubt with a late 6-0 run that made it 76-57 with 2:11 remaining.

Drew returns home on Saturday, when they take on Juniata College in another Landmark Conference match-up starting at 4 p.m.
