CHESTER, Pa. - The Drew University men's volleyball team continued its inaugural season on Tuesday and came up on the short end of a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-17) decision in a makeup match at Widener University.
Sophomore
Omarf Ortega-Reyes led the Rangers with seven kills while freshman
Jacob Sledz posted five kills. Freshman
C.J. Addeo and
Ephraim Smith contributed four kills apiece while classmate
Huriel Perez handed out 18 assists.
Matthew Christ totaled 11 kills, seven digs, and six service aces to lead the Pride, which was playing its season opener.
Widener never trailed in the opening set after racing out to a 7-1 lead. The Rangers trailed 18-11 before the Pride pulled away with a 6-1 run.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair early on, and after 11 ties and two lead changes the Rangers held an 11-10 edge. Ortega-Reyes and Smith each threw down two kills during the stretch while Sledz posted one kill and one ace.
Widener answered with a 6-0 run, taking the lead for good. The Rangers narrowed the deficit to three (16-13), but the Pride gradually pulled away.
The final set was also close in the early going, and Drew trailed just 7-5 after back-to-back kills from Sledz. But Widener scored the next five points and led by at least five the rest of the way.
The Rangers resume their schedule on Thursday, when they visit St. Joseph's Brooklyn in a match starting at 7 p.m.
