Men’s Basketball Holds Off Scranton in Championship Rematch

MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University men's basketball team made a pair of late defensive stands while going 4-for-4 at the foul line in the final 47 seconds, and the Rangers defeated the University of Scranton 66-58 Wednesday evening in Baldwin Gym in a rematch of last year's Landmark Conference (LC) championship game.

The Rangers (12-6, 6-1 LC), who won last year's conference title in overtime, finished the first half of their conference schedule in first place in the Landmark standings, leading Susquehanna University by one game in the win column.

Drew held Scranton to 34.5% percent shooting - including 28.0% in the second half - while holding an opponent to under 60 points for the fifth time this season.

Sophomore guard Malcolm Newman led Drew with 16 points and was one of four Rangers to score in double figures. Senior guard David Gervase netted 13 points while senior center Malachi Walker, Jr. contributed 12 points, six rebounds, and three blocked shots coming off the bench. Senior guard Lybrant Robinson pitched in with 11 points - including a highlight-reel dunk over a defender in the first half - to go with a career-high four steals while senior guard Drew Gallagher handed out five assists.

Jackson Danzig scored a game-high 19 points to pace the Royals (10-6, 4-2 LC), who cut a 14-point deficit down to four late in the game.

The Rangers jumped out to a 10-2 lead to start the game, but Scranton battled back to tie it at 16-16 with 10:15 left in the opening half. The Royals took their first lead three minutes later, then used a 7-0 run to build their largest lead of the game (32-26) with 3:03 left in the period. However, Drew scored the final six points of the half, with six coming from Newman, to assume a 34-32 lead at the intermission.

Early in the second half, Robinson set up junior forward Howard McBurnie, Jr. for a thunderous fastbreak dunk to put the Rangers up seven. The Blue and Green continued to pull away midway through the period, and a 14-5 run gave the hosts their largest lead of the night (57-43) with 7:50 left. Five different players scored during the burst, which was capped by a Robinson breakaway layup.

Scranton would not go away, however, and a 7-0 Royal spurt cut the deficit to five (60-55) with 3:10 remaining. Gervase hit a pair of big free throws with 1:33 left but the Royals answered with a conventional 3-point play to pull to within 62-58 with 1:05 on the clock.

Newman came through for the Rangers, however, hitting two crucial free throws in a 1-and-1 situation with 47 ticks showing to bump the lead back to six. Scranton missed a jumper at the other end, and it was rebounded by Walker, who was immediately fouled. He would knock down his only two free-throw attempts of the night with 34 seconds left before the Royals missed a 3-pointer on their final possession.

Drew continues its season on Saturday, when it visits Elizabethtown College at 2 p.m. in another Landmark Conference tilt.
