Women's Basketball Topped by Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. - The Drew University women's basketball team outscored the University of Scranton by seven points in the second half, but the host Royals used a big first half to hand the Rangers a 69-62 setback in Landmark Conference (LC) action Wednesday evening.

Scranton, which pushed its winning streak to 10, led by 14 at the half before the Rangers made it an eight-point game heading into the fourth quarter. The Royals went back up by 14 in the final period but Drew battled back with another rally late in the game.

Senior center Erin Frederick scored a season-high 20 points while shooting 6-for-6 at the foul line and grabbing six rebounds the Rangers (12-3, 3-3 LC). Junior guard Joey Meyers also contributed 20 points to go with five rebounds and four assists while senior guard Sekya Campbell pitched in with 11 points.

Abby Anderson led Scranton (16-2, 7-0 LC) with 25 points and eight rebounds while Bridget Monaghan posted 20 points, six rebounds, and four steals.

The Royals led for the entire game after starting the game on an 8-2 run. After trailing by as much as nine, Drew pulled to within five before Scranton took a 19-12 lead at the end of the opening period.

Scranton opened up a gap midway through the second quarter following an 11-2 run that made it 34-17 with 3:52 on the clock. The hosts led 36-22 at the break.

The Royals led by as many as 15 late in the third quarter, but that's when the Rangers closed the period on a 9-2 run to make it 51-43 after three periods of play. Frederick scored six points during the run, including a lay-up in the closing seconds.

Scranton pushed its lead back into double figures early in the fourth quarter and led 67-54 with 3:58 left before the Rangers found a late spark. Frederick scored four straight points before Campbell converted a lay-up to make it 67-60 with 42 seconds left. However, the Royals halted the rally with a lay-in of their own on the ensuing possession before Frederick set the final score in the final seconds with a pair of free throws.

The Rangers are back in action on Saturday, when they travel to Elizabethtown College at 4 p.m. in another Landmark Conference affair.
