ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Drew University women's basketball team held a lead early in the fourth quarter, but Elizabethtown College pulled away with a late run to hand the Rangers a 74-61 setback in Landmark Conference (LC) action Saturday afternoon.
The Rangers (12-4, 3-4 LC) led 55-54 with 7:35 left following an old-fashioned 3-point play from senior guard
Sekya Campbell. But that's when the Blue Jays (14-3, 6-1 LC) used a 14-0 run over the next four minutes to break it open.
Junior guard
Joey Meyers paced the Rangers with 18 points, six rebounds, and six steals while senior center
Erin Frederick contributed 16 points and seven rebounds. Senior forward
Cecelia Kracht added her first career double-double with 10 points, a career-high 11 rebounds, and four blocked shots while junior guard
Gwen Alberici dished out five assists. Campbell also posted four steals.
Veronica Christ led Elizabethtown with 24 points.
The Blue Jays never trailed in the first quarter, but they never led by more than four and the host led 18-14 after 10 minutes of play.
Etown led by seven (23-16) early in the second quarter, but that's when the Rangers ran off a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the game when Frederick dropped in a lay-up with 6:31 on the clock. Drew led 31-30 following a Meyers steal and lay-up with 3:08 remaining in the half, but the Blue Jays closed the stanza on an 8-2 run and led 38-33 at the intermission.
The hosts pushed their lead nine early in the third quarter, but the Rangers kept within striking distance and twice cut the deficit to four, the last coming on a lay-up from Meyer with 2:05 on the clock that made it 48-44. Campbell dropped in a lay-up at the buzzer to make it a 54-48 game heading into the final period.
The Rangers came out strong in the fourth quarter, opening with a 7-0 run. Frederick and Kracht each scored a bucket before Campbell's 3-point play put her team up 55-54, setting up Etown's decisive run.
Drew plays three home games next week, starting with a key Landmark Conference match-up with Moravian University on Monday at 7 p.m.
